An armed suspect is in custody Wednesday after he was shot at by Los Angeles Police Department officers during a confrontation in downtown Los Angeles.

LAPD officers from the department’s Southwest Division responded at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to a radio call regarding an armed man who was experiencing a mental health crisis inside an apartment in the 2300 block of Scarff Street and 23rd Street. When they arrived, the officers attempted to contact him and ask him leave the apartment, the LAPD said.

At one point, the suspect came out of the apartment holding what appeared to be a firearm, resulting in the officers shooting at the suspect, who retreated back inside the apartment. After further negotiations, he surrendered and the officers took him into custody, police said.

The suspect was not wounded during the shooting and no officers were injured during the confrontation.
