A 50-year-old transient was charged Friday with shooting another man in Stanton.

Freddie Martinez Jr. was charged with attempted murder with a sentencing enhancement for the discharge of a gun causing great bodily injury. Martinez pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in the jail courtroom in Santa Ana Friday and was scheduled to return to court for a pretrial hearing April 1 in the West Justice Center in Westminster.

Martinez was accused of shooting the victim in the face on Wednesday, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Matt Timmins. The two knew each other and may have had a previous dispute, he added.

The victim remained hospitalized Friday in critical condition, Timmins said.
