Felony charges are expected to be filed Tuesday against a reputed gang member suspected of shooting a man during a confrontation in Lake Elsinore.
Kenyelo Centeno Guzman, 19, of Lake Elsinore, was arrested and booked into the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta Thursday on suspicion of attempted murder, possession of a stolen firearm and presenting false identification to a peace officer.
Guzman was being held in lieu of $1 million bail while his case was under review by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.
According to sheriff’s Sgt. Jarrod Meissen, shortly after midnight on March 22, Guzman was involved in an apparent gang-related confrontation in the 600 block of West Lakeshore Drive, near South Lindsay Street.
During the encounter, Guzman pulled a handgun and opened fire on the man, whose name was not released, inflicting “multiple gunshot wounds,” Meissen said.
He said the suspect fled before patrol deputies converged on the location minutes later.
The victim was taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, where he remained on Monday, though his condition couldn’t be confirmed.
After gathering information at the scene, the investigation was turned over to the sheriff’s Gang Task Force, whose members identified Guzman as the alleged assailant, according to Meissen.
An arrest warrant was served on the suspect at an apartment on West Limited Avenue a week later. He was taken into custody without incident.
A 41-year-old relative of the suspect, Belica Guzman, was also arrested at the residence and booked into the Murrieta jail — on suspicion of child endangerment, obstructing a law enforcement official and tampering with evidence. She posted a $35,000 bond and was released hours later.
Background information on Kenyelo Guzman was unavailable.
