The driver of a group of suspects who police say were armed is in custody Thursday after leading police on a chase that began in South Gate and ended in Watts.
South Gate Police Department officers began chasing the suspects before turning them over to the California Highway Patrol, which followed the suspects into the Los Angeles International Airport in Westchester around 11 p.m. Wednesday, where the CHP unsuccessfully attempted a PIT maneuver on the suspects’ vehicle as it left an airport parking garage, KTLA 5 reported.
The chase continued down the Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway through Hawthorne with sparks flying from one the vehicle’s front wheels due to the unsuccessful PIT maneuver before leaving the freeway and abandoning the car at Mona Boulevard and East 115th Street in Watts and running from pursuing officers, authorities said.
The driver was arrested shortly after the suspects abandoned the vehicle.
The suspects were reportedly wanted for reportedly brandishing a gun , which initiated the pursuit. The remaining suspects are still at large, KTLA 5 reported.
