A man who was shot by police following a vehicle and foot chase that ended on a freeway on-ramp in the Watts area was identified Friday.

Osmin Briseno, 36, was shot at the end of the chase that began shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday near West 113th Street and Compton Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officers tried to stop Briseno, who was wanted on suspicion of child abduction, but he sped away at a high rate of speed, prompting the brief pursuit that ended when the suspect came to a stop on the Central Avenue on-ramp to the eastbound Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway, police said.

Briseno got out of the vehicle holding a backpack, and a short foot pursuit ensued.

According to the LAPD, officers repeatedly instructed Briseno not to reach inside his backpack, but he ultimately turned to face a pursuing officer and allegedly reached into his backpack, prompting an officer to open fire.

“Briseno was struck by gunfire and fell on the pavement, where he was taken into custody,” police said in a statement.

He was taken to a hospital, where he received treatment for gunshot wounds. He was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and several outstanding felony warrants, police said.

No weapons were recovered at the scene. No officers were injured.
