Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detectives Saturday are continuing their investigation of the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old boy in Fig/Oleander Park in Compton.

Deputies from the Compton Sheriff’s Station responded to the park at North Oleander Avenue and West Fig Street regarding an assault with a deadly weapon/gunshot victim at 3:55 p.m. Friday, according to the sheriff’s department.

They found the boy in the park and began first aid measures. Paramedics from the Compton Fire Department arrived and took him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Witnesses described the suspect in the shooting as a man wearing all black clothing- including a black ski mask – who was last seen running northbound on Oleander Avenue and out of view, deputies said.

Sheriff’s investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting.

The homicide was the first of two in Compton Friday.

Deputies from the Compton Sheriff’s Station were called at 11:08 p.m. Friday to the 100 block of North Poinsettia Avenue, near East Compton Boulevard, where they found a man who was pronounced dead at the scene, said homicide Lt. Michael Modica.

It was unclear how the man was killed.
