A man in his 40s who police say was armed with a knife when he was shot by Los Angeles Police Department officers in Tarzana is in critical condition, police said Tuesday.

LAPD officers responded at 9:30 p.m. Monday to the 6200 block of Reseda Boulevard between Calvert and Erwin streets regarding an assault with a deadly weapon call at an apartment complex. According to police, the call described the suspect as” possibly suffering from mental illness” and was on the second floor of the apartment complex, the LAPD said.

The suspect was described as yelling and armed with a knife and a frying pan. As officers approached the courtyard of the complex, they saw the suspect with a knife and an officer shot the suspect, the LAPD said.

The suspect was hit by gunfire and taken to a hospital, where he is in critical condition. No officers were injured in the shooting and the knife remains at the scene, police said.
