A man was shot by an unknown assailant while sitting in a parked car near downtown Banning, authorities said Wednesday.
The attack happened shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of West Nicolet Street, near Eighth Street, according to the Banning Police Department.
Capt. Brandon Smith said the victim, whose identity was not disclosed, was sitting in his car when he was targeted by the shooter.
Witnesses called 911 as the assailant fled the location.
Smith said the victim suffered a non-life-threatening wound and was taken to a regional trauma center for treatment.
Patrol officers discovered spent bullet cartridges from a handgun on the roadway, but no other details were provided, including a possible motive or a description of the assailant.
