Police Wednesday asked for the public’s help in identifying a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a 34-year-old bicyclist in the Broadway-Manchester area of South Los Angeles earlier this month.

The victim was identified as Jose Villalobos of Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office.

The crash occurred around 11:10 p.m. June 1 as Villalobos was riding west on Century Boulevard near San Pedro Street, where he was hit by a speeding silver Chevrolet Camaro traveling in the same direction, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

“Following the crash, the driver of the Camaro made a right turn onto San Pedro Street, continued northbound, and then turned westbound onto East 98th Street, fleeing the scene without stopping to render aid or identify themselves, as required by law,” police said.

Paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department pronounced Villalobos dead at the scene, police said.

Graphic video of the crash, posted by LAPD, shows the moment Villalobos was struck and thrown onto the roadway. It is available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDMxkaiVUVc.

Detectives with the LAPD’s South Traffic Division are urging anyone with information about the crash to call 213-321-9681. Tips can also be made through L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477) or www.lacrimestoppers.org.
