A 33-year-old man struck and killed by an SUV on the Marina (90) Freeway in Los Angeles was being mourned Tuesday by family, friends, former teammates and coaches, who remembered his standout football career at Bishop Montgomery High School and San Jose State University.

The crash involving a Toyota RAV4, occurred about 2 a.m. Sunday on the eastbound side of the freeway near the Centinela Avenue off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The victim, later identified by the county Medical Examiner’s office as Chandler Jones, was pronounced dead at the scene. His city of residence wasn’t provided.

Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance issued a statement about Jones’ death.

“It is with great sadness that we share the passing of alum, Chandler Jones ’09,” the statement read. “Jones was a standout player on Bishop’s football team and still holds the record for longest kick-off return (97 yards) and longest fumble recovery (98 yards).”

At San Jose State University, Jones was a stand-out receiver. In 2013, he recorded 79 catches for 1,356 yards and 15 touchdowns, earning first-team All-Mountain West Conference honors, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Jones went on to play professional for the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and in the Canadian Football League with the Montreal Alouettes. He later coached at San Jose State, College of Idaho and the Alouettes, the Times reported.
