A bicyclist was fatally struck by a vehicle in Hemet whose driver fled the location and led officers on a short pursuit before being arrested, police said Sunday.

Officers responded to a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle in the area of Domenigoni Parkway and State Street at 5:36 p.m. Saturday, where they located a deceased man in the roadway, according to the Hemet Police Department.

Several bystanders reported that the vehicle involved in the crash fled the location, and provided officers with a vehicle description and direction of travel. Officers located the vehicle and attempted an enforcement stop, but the driver allegedly refused to yield and led officers on a brief pursuit which lasted about three minutes, according to the police department.

The driver was subsequently arrested and booked into the Riverside County Jail.

Investigators said the pedestrian was riding on Domenigoni Parkway when he was struck by the vehicle, which was traveling eastbound. The investigation was ongoing, but authorities said they believe driving under the influence appeared to be a factor in the crash.

The identities of the bicyclist and the driver were not immediately available.

Domenigoni Parkway was closed from State Street to Searl Parkway from about 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. for the investigation.

Anyone with additional information regarding this crash was encouraged to contact Corporal Christian Coley at 951-765-2400.
