Emergency crews Wednesday rescued a man from a manhole in downtown Los Angeles while police investigated a nearby assault report.

Los Angeles Fire Department personnel, HazMat crews and an urban search and rescue team were called around noon to Olympic Boulevard and Maple Avenue for a 28-year-old man trapped inside a manhole, LAFD spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz said

Crews launched a confined space rescue operation and successfully removed the man. He was taken to a hospital in fair condition, Lantz said.

Meanwhile, police officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 300 block of Olympic Boulevard, about a block away from the rescue site, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

It was not immediately clear if the two incidents were related. No additional details about the possible assault were available.
