Homemade illegal fireworks found at a business in San Gabriel Wednesday triggered an emergency response, with a Los Angeles County bomb squad deployed as evacuations and street closures were put in place to secure the area.

The United States Postal Service notified the San Gabriel Police Department around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday about a suspicious package at 1818 S. San Gabriel Boulevard, about a quarter-mile south of Valley Boulevard, according to city officials.

Postal inspectors made contact with an individual who acknowledged possessing illegal fireworks.

The bomb squad supervised the removal of illegal homemade fireworks while the San Gabriel Fire Department took charge of disposing of any leftover fireworks.

A 500-foot evacuation zone was set up around the area as a safety measure, according to city officials.

Residents and businesses within the area were notified, and shelter was provided at Gabrielino High School for those displaced by the evacuation.

San Gabriel Boulevard, from Valley Boulevard to Marshall Street, was closed.

The situation remained under investigation Wednesday afternoon.
