A 41-year-old man was charged Friday with leading police on a chase from the West San Fernando Valley to Newport Beach that started with a carjacking and ended with a crash.

The pursuit began around 12:30 a.m. Thursday when officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Valley Community Police Station saw the Chevrolet Silverado, police said.

The pursuit continued on the Hollywood (101) Freeway into downtown Los Angeles and to Newport Beach, where the suspect crashed near Kings Place and Cliff Drive about 2:30 a.m., police said.

Reed Mitchell Morrison was charged with carjacking, leading police on a chase, assault with a weapon on a police officer and vandalism, all felonies. He also faces a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a gun.

Morrison pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in the jail courtroom in Santa Ana. He was next due in court for a pretrial hearing July 21 in the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach.

Video from the scene showed the suspect being loaded into an ambulance from the Newport Beach Fire Department after his arrest.
