A sweep was underway Thursday of a large homeless encampment along the San Diego (405) Freeway in Van Nuys.

Several Los Angeles Police Department units were at the scene in the 15000 block of Oxnard Street, near a public storage facility next to the northbound 405, LAPD confirms being there since around 5:15 a.m. An officer had no details on what exactly the police were doing at the location, but broadcast reports showed the sweep being conducted amid dozens of tents and piles of trash.

It’s unclear which agencies are involved in the sweep, but a number of city workers were at the scene.

A group of people were at the encampment, during the Thursday morning sweep, protesting and advocating for the unhoused individuals, according to a broadcast report that indicated the encampment has been cleaned up several times in the past.

In 2023, a homeless sweep planned near the Metro G Line station in Van Nuys was nixed after a wave of support was expressed for the unhoused residents.
