Police in downtown Santa Ana Tuesday were investigating a fatal head-on crash that allegedly was caused by a wrong-way driver who was killed in the violent collision.

One other person was killed and five people sustained minor injuries in the crash around 6:35 p.m. Monday near the 2200 block of North Main Street, north of Warner Avenue.

According to preliminary reports, a BMW traveling the wrong way on Main Street “at a high rate of speed” slammed into a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, triggering the multi-vehicle crash, Santa Ana Police Department spokeswoman Natalie Garcia told City News Service.

Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene and five people were taken to a hospital in stable condition, Garcia said.

Police told reporters at the scene that the driver of the vehicle struck by the BMW was also killed.

One of the deceased was a male and the other a female, according to broadcast reports. Their identities were not immediately available.

The other injuries were said to be minor.
