Police in Los Angeles Monday were investigating an officer’s use of beanbag shotgun rounds, at least one of which struck the head of a suspect who ended up in a hospital.
The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Jeffrey Mayorga, had been involved in some kind of family disturbance that drew officers to the 500 block of Kensington Road around 7:40 p.m. Sunday.
“The comments of the call indicated a restraining order was on file and the suspect … had a felony warrant for an assault with a deadly weapon,” according to a Los Angeles Police Department statement.
Arriving officers found Mayorga outside a residence holding a skateboard.
“The officers repeatedly verbalized with Mayorga to drop the skateboard or force may be used,” police said. “Mayorga failed to comply with the officers’ commands and attempted to re-enter the residence when a non- categorical use of force occurred, during which an officer deployed several rounds from a beanbag shotgun.”
Mayorga was then taken into custody and brought to a hospital for treatment of a head injury “as a result of the beanbag deployment.”
No other injuries were reported.
An update on Mayorga’s condition was not immediately available.
