Long Beach Police Department officers Friday are continuing their investigation of a fatal hit and run collision involving a loaded trailer in the Wrigley neighborhood of Long Beach.
Officers responded at 8:10 p.m. Wednesday to the area of Oregon Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway regarding a person down. When they arrived at the scene, the officers found an injured man lying on the southwest sidewalk of the intersection, according to a LBPD press release.
Long Beach Fire Department personnel took the victim to a hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.
A preliminary investigation revealed a semi-truck with a loaded trailer was turning southbound onto Oregon from eastbound Pacific Coast Highway and during the turn, the rear tires of the trailer rolled onto the sidewalk and struck the victim, who appeared to have been sleeping on the sidewalk, according to the police department. The driver of the semi-truck continued southbound on Oregon and did not remain at the scene.
At this time, police said neither speed, distracted driving, nor impaired driving are believed to be contributing factors in the collision.
Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is asked to call LBPD Det. Joseph Johnson of the department’s Collision Investigation Detail at 562-570-7355.
