A 30-year-old man remained in custody Thursday, suspected of attempting to stab a Cathedral City police officer with a knife resulting in minor injuries to the officer.

Juan Francisco Sosa Jr. was arrested and booked on July 27 for suspicion of attempted murder to a peace officer and use of deadly and dangerous weapon.

He was being held without bail.

According to the Cathedral City Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call at a residence on Pueblo Trail at 3:11 p.m. on July 27 regarding a verbal disturbance between family members.

A video released by the department on Aug. 18 revealed Officer Marcus Ayala knocking on the front door when Sosa opened the door and lunged at the officer with a knife in hand.

Ayala then slammed Sosa to a wall while the suspect repeatedly struck the officer’s kevlar vest in the back.

An unidentified woman at the residence was seen trying to remove the weapon from Sosa’s hand but Ayala repeatedly yelled for the woman to stay back.

After Ayala wrestled Sosa to the ground, a second police officer rushed to aid Ayala and removed the weapon of the suspect’s hands.

The video concludes by stating that Ayala sustained “a minor laceration and returned to duty shortly after.”
