Police Thursday are continuing their investigation of a fatal collision between an Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s vehicle and a pedestrian in Orange.

Orange Police Department officers responded around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday to Chapman Avenue and Prospect Street regarding a collision. Investigators learned a man was crossing the street outside of the crosswalk when he was struck by the sheriff’s department SUV, according to reports from the scene.

The deputy driving the SUV was not driving with lights and sirens on when it struck the man, according to an investigator at the scene who added that the deputy was on duty at the time.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by Orange Fire Department personnel.

The sheriff’s vehicle suffered significant damage to its front windshield in the collision.

The collision closed traffic on Chapman between Prospect and James streets for several hours while police investigated the circumstances surrounding the collision.
