Los Angeles Police Department officers shot and wounded an armed suspect in Boyle Heights and Monday an investigation of the shooting is underway.

Members from the department’s Hollenbeck Gang Enforcement Unit were on patrol at 10:45 p.m. Sunday near the 2400 block of Malabar Street and North Soto Street, where they encountered the suspect armed with a gun, an LAPD spokesman told City News Service.

The suspect ran away from the scene, leading officers on a short foot pursuit to the rear alley of an apartment complex in the 2400 block of Boulder Street and Fickett Street, police said, where he drew a handgun and an officer involved shooting occurred.

The suspect’s handgun was recovered at the scene and it will be collected as evidence, authorities said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics and is in stable condition.

The area of Fickett and Boulder streets will be closed for several hours while police investigate the shooting and no officers were injured during the shooting, police said.
