A 66-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and narcotics following a traffic stop in Palm Springs, authorities said Wednesday.

Jeffrey Paul Schulze of Rancho Mirage was booked into Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on Wednesday on suspicion of possession of base narcotic for sale, possession of PCP, transportation or distribution of controlled substances and having a concealed firearm in a vehicle, police said.

Schulze’s bail was set at $50,000.

Police officers conducted a traffic stop shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday in the area of South Palm Canyon Drive and Morongo Road, according to Palm Springs Police Lt. Gustavo Araiza. The vehicle was a white Ford van that displayed expired registration, police added.

During a search of the van, officers allegedly found an unregistered, unloaded firearm, “suspected fentanyl, cocaine and methamphetamine in amounts consistent with sales, along with unused plastic baggies,” Araiza said.

Additionally, officers allegedly discovered the license plate attached to the van did not belong to the vehicle, and it was not immediately known if the van was stolen.

Schulze was taken into custody without incident Tuesday night.
