A 27-year-old man who was beaten to death with a large stick in the unincorporated Los Angeles County community of Rowland Heights was identified Monday.

Deputies were summoned just after 11 p.m. Friday to the 18000 block of Colima Road for an assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Arriving deputies found a man at the intersection of Colima and Jellick Avenue suffering from blunt force trauma injuries, sheriff’s officials said. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

He was identified Monday by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner as Wilson De Leon Gutierrez, whose cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.

Sheriff’s officials said a suspect with a large stick hit the man and left the location on a bus. Deputies stopped the bus and detained a person of interest.

Anyone with information was asked to call homicide detectives at 323-890-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
