A tow truck driver was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle and killed Tuesday morning while assisting a motorist stopped on the Harbor (110) Freeway in South Los Angeles, causing lane closures that lasted nearly six hours.

California Highway Patrol officers responded at approximately 1:35 a.m. Tuesday to the southbound freeway and the West Florence Avenue exit, CHP Officer Elizabeth Kravig told City News Service.

The victim — a man whose name and age were not immediately disclosed — was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.

The driver of a southbound vehicle did not stop after striking the victim, who was working on a vehicle on the right shoulder, a CHP officer told KTLA5.

The suspect’s vehicle was later found, but the driver remained at large, the station reported.

The CHP issued a Sigalert for the closure of all lanes of the southbound freeway at the Florence exit for over four hours, finally opening two lanes at around 5:40 a.m. Tuesday.

All lanes were reopened by 7 a.m.
