One person was killed Monday in a multi-vehicle crash on the Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Irvine.
The crash was reported about 8:30 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway just south of Jeffrey Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was unclear if anyone else was badly injured in the crash, which backed up traffic in both directions.
Initially, all northbound lanes were closed but the CHP reopened two lanes about 20 minutes after the crash was reported.
