A parole agent shot a suspect in Palm Springs Monday, and an ambulance carrying the wounded person to a hospital subsequently got into a traffic crash, injuring a firefighter and police officer who were traveling with the suspect.

Officers were contacted at about 11:35 a.m. Monday by a parole agent who reported being involved in a fight with a person he was trying to detain in the 2700 block of E. Vista Chino, according to the Palm Springs Police Department. The agent then reported that a shooting had occurred.

Arriving officers found the unnamed suspect with a gunshot wound and summoned an ambulance to take the suspect to a hospital, accompanied by an officer and firefighter.

The ambulance, however, collided with another vehicle at East Vista Chino and Sunrise Way, police said. The people inside the ambulance suffered minor to moderate injuries.

The suspect was eventually taken to a hospital and had stable vital signs. It was unclear if other occupants of the ambulance required hospitalization.

The parole agent was treated at the scene for injuries he suffered in the altercation with the suspect.

Vista Chino was closed between North Farrell Drive and North Gene Autry Trail while authorities investigated the shooting.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Force Investigation Division assumed the investigation.

Anyone with additional information was urged to call Detective Alex Doherty at 760-323-8142, or at Alexander.Doherty@palmspringsca.gov.
