A brush fire that broke out Wednesday on a hillside just east of Lake Elsinore charred nine acres and consumed part of a truck before it was stopped.

The non-injury blaze was reported at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Sophie Street and Mapes Road, south of Highway 74, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said multiple engine and hand crews were sent to the location and encountered flames burning in a large rubbish pile, spreading over a hill in the direction of several homes.

Two Cal Fire air tankers and a water-dropping helicopter initiated runs on the brusher by 2:40 p.m., halting its forward rate of spread 20 minutes later, according to officials at the scene.

Half of a tractor-trailer was lost in the fire. It was unclear why it was parked there.

The blaze was completely contained at 3:45 p.m. Firefighters finished mopping up two hours later.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
