A pedestrian was struck and killed Wednesday by a Riverside Transit Agency bus in Riverside.
Officers responded shortly before 4:20 p.m. Wednesday near Chicago Avenue and 12th Street to reports regarding a severe collision, according to the Riverside Police Department.
Police said responding officers discovered the victim with critical injuries, who was taken to a hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries. The driver of the RTA bus remained at the scene during the investigation.
Detectives determined after further investigation that a male pedestrian entered the street from a sidewalk and allegedly stood in front of the bus as it attempted to drive away from the bus stop alongside the curb.
”The bus struck the man then came to a stop in the southbound lanes of Chicago Avenue,” the police department said in a statement.
The investigation was being handled by the Major Accident Investigation Team.
Anyone with information about the fatal collision was urged to call the Riverside Police Department Traffic Division at 951-826-8723 or email Detective Amanda Beeman at ABeeman@riversideca.gov.

As I understand RTA drivers are supposed to call dispatch if they cannot move forward. Police are called at that time.
If he was trying to stop the bus, that was the wrong way to do it.
So misfortunate.
I was there. I frequently commute on the bus and I have a vehicle. I have personally observed drivers go through a lot by dealing with belligerent and dangerous people. I believe the driver felt threatened for his safety and the safety of the passenger. He can’t just stop there. Any madman can easily open those flimsy bus doors
Standing in front of the bus wow as the bus is leaving what was he thinking usely when ur not at the bus stop when the bus get they don’t have time to wait for anybody they r on a schedule schedule
But that doesn’t give him reason to just run over is either.
I live 2 blocks from that corner literally! There IS NO X WALK, NO STOP light and just the vehicles alone go through the street sometimes like it’s a @# racetrack. It is NOT the safest place to cross the street. Even if there is a Bus Stop or By law, it is the Corner of an Intersection. I mean really! This is something that can be disputed over for hours. Let’s just admit the obvious. NOT the safest place to cross the street; There IS NO X WALK, NO STOP light, Detectives determined after further investigation that a male pedestrian entered the street from a sidewalk, allegedly stood in front of the bus as it attempted to drive away, The bus struck the man then came to a stop. Yes; the man did die. Yes; it it sad. But no one has said two very important issues!!!! 1-What was the deceased man going through to want to do such a thing? 2-How in the hell do you think the bus driver feels??
The guy was a homeless man trying to get on the bus. The homeless man was trying to stop the bus feom going so he could hop on, the bus driver that was driving at an angle trying to get away from the man suddenly drive forwards running the man over with both front and back wheels.
