Varner Road in Cathedral City remained closed Sunday after heavy rainfall caused a mudslide that immobilized 30 vehicles and stranded their occupants.
The mudslide was reported at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday between Date Palm and Mountain View roads, according to the Cathedral City Police Department.
Cathedral City police officers and firefighters evacuated 32 people to a staging area, and public works crews used two tractors to clear mud and debris from the road so the stranded vehicles could be removed, police said.
According to a Cathedral City police dispatcher, the road still needed cleanup and remained closed as of Sunday morning. Police did not have an estimated time of reopening.
