A 46-year-old man was behind bars Monday for allegedly shooting a 54-year-old man in Cathedral City.

Mario Antonio Abelon of Palm Desert was booked into Benoit Detention Center in Indio on suspicion of attempted murder, robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting about 8:40 p.m. Sunday in the 35300 block of Corregidor Drive, according to the Cathedral City Police Department.

Police said Abelon and the victim were in a “verbal argument,” during which he allegedly produced a firearm from a vehicle and fired a round that struck the other man in the stomach.

Abelon fled the scene before officers arrived.

The victim, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he had stable vital signs.

Authorities conducted surveillance in the area of south Palm Desert and found Abelon, who was taken into custody without incident.

Background information on Abelon was not immediately available.

Anyone with additional information on the shooting was asked to contact Detective Juan Ramirez at 760-770-0330, or report tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 760-341-7867.
