A boy skateboarding on the west end of Menifee was struck while going through an intersection, suffering major injuries, authorities said Tuesday.

The youth, identified only as a Menifee teenager, was hit at 9:35 p.m. Monday at Murrieta and Murphy Ranch roads, according to the Menifee Police Department.

Agency spokesman Chase Coburn said the victim was riding his non-motorized skateboard southbound on Murrieta when he entered the intersection “without reflective gear” on any part of his body and was hit by a motorist in a Honda Civic traveling at an unconfirmed speed.

“The juvenile, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the skateboard upon impact and sustained injuries to his head, along with abrasions to his arms,” Coburn said. “The driver immediately stopped to render aid, and a passenger in the vehicle called 911.”

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics treated the boy at the scene, after which he was taken to a regional trauma center, where he remained in critical but stable condition Tuesday, according to police.

The motorist, whose identity was not disclosed, was questioned but not arrested.

“Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol are contributing factors,” Coburn said.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call the police department’s Traffic Unit at 951-723-1566.
