A man who allegedly assaulted family members in the past, who stabbed his father to death Wednesday in the Lake Balboa area of the San Fernando Valley, was identified by county authorities Thursday.
Elias Bonilla, 62, was killed by his son Joshua Bonilla, 30, who was then fatally shot by an officer, according to the Los Angeles Police Department and their identities were confirmed by the county medical examiner.
Officers were called at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday to the 17200 block of Valerio Street, police said.
Officers sent to the address were informed that a man who had attacked family members in the past was involved in a domestic dispute, an LAPD spokesman told reporters at the scene.
Arriving officers heard sounds of a struggle and forced their way into the house, where the suspect, Joshua Bonilla was fighting with his father, Elias Bonilla. At least one officer opened fire and Joshua Bonilla was struck by gunfire.
A Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman said crews responded after being summoned at about 8:10 a.m. by police who reported a shooting. The LAFD did not transport anyone to a hospital, according to department spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz.
A pair of scissors was recovered by police, but it was not immediately clear if they had been used during the attack.
