Authorities Tuesday were searching for an assailant who stabbed a man on a Murrieta street and then fled the area, successfully eluding law enforcement officers despite an extensive search.
The attack happened shortly before 8 p.m. Monday in the area of Whitewood Road and Country Walk Lane, according to the Murrieta Police Department.
Capt. Jeremy Durrant said the victim, identified only as a 44-year-old resident of the city, was attacked on Whitewood, though the circumstances were unclear.
The man ran to a house on nearby Old Carriage Road for help, telling the homeowner that he had been stabbed, describing the suspect as a man in his 20s, according to Durrant.
The homeowner called 911 and patrol officers arrived within minutes, obtaining a description of the suspect and initiating a street-by-street search, utilizing a K9 unit and requesting assistance from a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department helicopter crew, the captain said.
“Despite these efforts, officers were unable to locate a suspect,” he said. “Additional evidence was located on Whitewood and collected as part of the ongoing investigation.”
The victim was taken to a regional trauma center for treatment of a non-life-threatening wound to his shoulder and was in stable condition Tuesday, authorities said.
Specific details about the stabbing, including possible motive, were not disclosed.
Anyone with information relevant to the investigation was asked to contact detectives at 951-461-6340.

Could you please correct the headline so that it has the correct city name? I’m sorry, but that is some lazy editorial work.
Correct the spelling of Murrieta in the story title.
