A man was shot by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies after he allegedly pointed a handgun at deputies while refusing to leave a business in the La Puente area, authorities said Monday.

The Industry Station deputies were sent at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday to a business in the 500 block of Workman Mill Road to deal with a disturbance/possible mentally ill person, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. That is east of the California Country Club golf course and the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway.

The man had entered the employee area of the business and refused to leave, sheriff’s officials said.

The suspect produced a handgun and pointed it at deputies when they contacted him and they fired their weapons at him, officials said.

The man was struck by gunfire and deputies rendered medical aid until he was taken to a hospital by ambulance, officials said. His condition was not released.

A loaded gun was recovered at the scene, sheriff’s officials said. No deputies were injured.

The shooting investigation by sheriff’s homicide detectives continued.

Anyone with information about the situation was asked to call homicide detectives at 323-890-5500 or leave an anonymous tip at Crime Stoppers, 800-222-8477.
