A person was fatally shot Wednesday during a confrontation that spilled onto a Metro bus in South Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Police Department responded shortly before 2 p.m. to reports of a shooting near Normandie Avenue and West 39th Street by Exposition Park, Metro media relations communications director Jose Ubaldo told City News Service.

Metro officials said a group of young men became involved in a dispute near a bus stop, which escalated onto a Line 206 bus. During the altercation on board, someone opened fire, striking at least one person, Metro said.

The victim, who was not immediately identified, was later pronounced dead, KCBS reported, citing information from the LAPD.

The suspects fled before officers arrived.

“Metro extends its condolences to the victim’s family,” the public transit agency said in a statement.

Anyone with information about the dispute or the shooting was urged to contact the LAPD, which is leading the investigation. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
