A man in his 20s was fatally shot during an altercation with several people on a Metro bus in South Los Angeles and the shooter was still on the loose Thursday.

The Los Angeles Police Department responded at 1:58 p.m. Wednesday to reports of a shooting near a Metro bus stop at Normandie Avenue and West 39th Street, an LAPD spokesman told City News Service.

During the altercation, one person from the group fired a weapon, striking the victim, police said. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene, where they pronounced the victim dead.

The unidentified suspects ran from the scene prior to the officers’ arrival.

“This afternoon, an altercation among a group of young men started on the street near a bus stop and spilled into a bus on line 206, which was headed northbound at Normandie and 39th Street in South Los Angeles,” Metro media relations communications director Jose Ubaldo told CNS.

“As the altercation continued on the bus, a member of the group shot and fatally injured another member of the group. The suspects fled before police arrived. Metro extends its condolences to the victim’s family.”
