A person was killed and at least 16 people were injured Sunday morning in a multi-vehicle crash on the Golden State (5) Freeway in Boyle Heights, where a big rig crashed into multiple vehicles, authorities said.
The crash on the southbound freeway, just south of 4th Street, occurred about 5:10 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
At least one vehicle caught fire and a “physical rescue” was requested, said Jennifer Middleton of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The CHP shut down all southbound lanes at 5:22 a.m. for at least two to three hours and confirmed that nine vehicles sustained major front end damage. It was unclear if the big rig was loaded.
Paramedics transported some of the injured — with moderate injuries — to Adventist Health White Memorial hospital, the CHP said.
There was no other immediate information available.
