A Riverside County Fire Department crewman battling a blaze at a Nuevo home Wednesday collapsed from an undisclosed “medical emergency” that culminated in his death.
Apparatus Engineer Danny Cook died after he was transported to a regional trauma center Wednesday morning, according to officials.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of … Danny Cook,” according to an agency statement. “Engineer Cook’s passing is a devastating loss to our department, the fire service and the community he served with dedication and professionalism. His commitment to duty and service will not be forgotten.”
According to the governor’s office, Cook, 45, had been with Cal Fire since June 2006. He is survived by a wife and three children.
“Today, Jennifer and I mourn the loss of Engineer Cook who served his community with honor and integrity,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement. “We offer our most sincere condolences to his family, friends, loved ones and colleagues during this difficult time. May his service and sacrifice never be forgotten.”
Cook was among multiple engine crews sent to a fire reported at 5:27 a.m. Wednesday in the garage of a single-story house in the 31300 block of Marcuchio Road, near Hansen Avenue.
The fire department said two occupants of the property, identified only as a man and woman, suffered minor injuries, including superficial burns and smoke inhalation.
During containment operations, Cook suffered a major health complication requiring immediate attention from paramedics. No specific details were disclosed, however.
Engineers generally oversee water supplies and flow rates, hose integrity and other apparatus maintenance, without directly engaging a blaze with their fellow crew members.
Cook was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
“Despite exhaustive efforts of fire and medical personnel, Engineer Cook succumbed to the medical emergency,” according to the fire department statement.
The two victims of the house fire were taken to the same hospital and are now recovering, officials said. The blaze was knocked down within an hour. No other firefighters were injured. The source of the fire was under investigation.
“Our deepest condolences are extended to Engineer Cook’s family, loved ones and his fire department family during this incredibly difficult time,” the department stated.
No details on memorial services were immediately available. Newsom ordered flags at the state Capitol to be lowered to half-staff in Cooks’ honor.
