Highgrove Elementary School was open for classes Wednesday after reports of an armed individual walking near the campus prompted a lockdown of the school on Tuesday.
Deputies responded to a report of a subject armed with a weapon walking near the school at 8:14 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Center Street and Transit Avenue in the unincorporated area of Highgrove, according to Sgt. Robert Martinez of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
They conducted an extensive search, which prompted the facility to be placed on a temporary lockdown.
“It has been reported that this incident was brought to the attention of the sheriff’s office by concerned members of the community, and we appreciate the vigilance,” the Riverside Unified School District said in a statement Tuesday.
“During the lockdown, students remained safely in their classrooms under staff supervision, with doors secured, until law enforcement gave the all-clear,” the district added.
Deputies were unable to locate the subject and no arrests were made, Martinez said.
According to district officials, there was no threat identified on campus and the campus was cleared before normal operations resumed.
