A Chilean man who admitted persuading a 14-year-old girl he met online to send him pornographic pictures of herself and agree to have sex with him when he traveled to Los Angeles is expected to be sentenced Monday on federal charges.

Daniel Aravena Oliva pleaded guilty in March 2025 in federal court to enticement of a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity and possession of child pornography.

Oliva admitted that between December 2023 and May 2024, he used video chats from Chile to convince the San Gabriel Valley teen to create child pornography of herself, which he then produced by taking screenshots of the calls on his phone, according to the government’s sentencing papers.

He also convinced the girl to meet and have sex with him if he were to travel to Southern California. Prosecutors say he knew the girl was underage and that what he was doing was illegal.

In order to manipulate the teen, Oliva — who was then 20 years old — threatened to expose the photos to the girl’s family if she did not do as he wished.

In April 2024, the girl’s family discovered the communications, blocked her ability to communicate with the defendant, and reported the incident to law enforcement.

Four months later, Oliva spent more than 12 hours flying from Chile to Los Angeles International Airport to meet and have sex with the minor. Law enforcement, alerted to his travel, stopped him at the airport. When he arrived at LAX, Oliva had his iPhone containing about 50 pornographic images of the girl in the “deleted photos” area of the phone, court papers show.

Oliva’s sentencing position is sealed from public view and his attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.

Prosecutors are asking that U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald sentence Oliva to 14 years behind bars, followed by five years’ supervised release.

The defendant “enticed and abused a minor child in another country for months,” according to the government.

“He used that minor to create brand new child pornography and convinced the minor to have sex with him. Even when he was discovered by the minor’s family and law enforcement, that did not stop him from traveling across continents to attempt to have sex with the minor. And, when he traveled, he brought dozens of images of child pornography of the minor that he had created himself.”
