A Menifee police officer and another motorist were injured Wednesday in a multi-vehicle crash that occurred as the patrolman was going through a Menifee intersection en route to a call for service.

The crash happened just after 2 p.m. Wednesday at McCall Boulevard and Menifee Road, according to the Menifee Police Department and the Riverside County Fire Department.

Police spokesman Chase Coburn said the lawman, whose identity was not disclosed, was heading in an unspecified direction at an unconfirmed speed to answer “a medical aid call for service.”

“The collision occurred as the officer was crossing the intersection,” Coburn said, without specifying whether the patrol unit’s overhead lights and siren were both activated.

County fire officials said several engine crews were sent to the location and found three vehicles damaged in the middle of the intersection.

One motorist suffered moderate injuries, while another suffered minor injuries. Both were taken to a regional trauma center for treatment, according to the fire department. Coburn indicated the officer was the one who had minor injuries and was taken to a hospital “out of an abundance of caution.”

The third driver was evidently unharmed.

The motorists were not identified.

As of 5 p.m. the intersection remained completely shut down by the California Highway Patrol, whose officers were handling the investigation at the request of Menifee police.
