A 50-year-old man lost his balance as he was getting off a Metro E Line train in downtown Los Angeles Monday, fell between the couplers of two train cars and was killed.

Paramedics responded at about 5:45 p.m. to the 7th Street/Metro Center station to free the man from the tracks, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz.

The victim was taken to a hospital and was listed in critical condition.

The man was later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to Metro and the Los Angeles Police Department.
