An Adelanto man was charged Tuesday in connection with a hit-and-run collision in Newport Beach that killed a pedestrian over the weekend.

Jesus Alvarez, 26, was charged with murder and felony hit-and-run with permanent and serious injury.

Newport Beach police said Alvarez struck and killed 21-year-old Steven Alcaraz Aguilar of Laguna Hills early Saturday.

Officers responded about 2 a.m. to Newport Boulevard and 24th Street after the pedestrian was struck by a Chevrolet Corvette, police said.

Alvarez is accused of leaving the scene but was found nearby and booked on suspicion of driving under the influence, police said.

According to a GoFundMe page, Aguilar was killed on his birthday. The family said it is raising money for his funeral and has collected about $15,400 of an $18,000 goal.
