The Santa Monica Pier was open Monday after a shooting left two people, one of them the suspected gunman, with non-life-threatening injuries, sending visitors scrambling for safety.

The shooting happened at about 9 p.m. Sunday. Officers were dispatched to the pier after shots were reported, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.

The gunfire occurred during a large fight involving multiple people

“During the incident, one individual sustained a gunshot wound to the arm and was taken to a local hospital,” SMPD Lt. Lewis Gilmour said. “Officers responded quickly to the scene and provided initial medical aid to the victim before paramedics arrived.”

The department maintains a regular patrol presence on the pier, making for a swift response, he said.

“A second individual, who suffered a graze wound, also sought medical treatment at a local hospital. Detectives later determined that the second injured individual was the suspected shooter.”

The suspect was identified as Jaysawn Williams, 18, of Rialto, who was taken into custody after receiving medical treatment and transported to the Santa Monica Jail.

Williams was booked on suspicion of assault with a firearm and grossly negligent discharge of a firearm.

The pier has since reopened and normal operations have resumed, Gilmour said.

The cause of the fight remains under investigation.

Video from the scene showed people on the beach scrambling after the shots rang out. Arriving officers tended to the wounded until paramedics arrived to take them to a hospital, police said.

The age and gender of the wounded victim was not released.
