Riverside County sheriff’s detectives arrested a man suspected of shooting another man to death in Moreno Valley in 2004, authorities said Saturday.
Authorities arrested 45-year-old Corey Sampson of the San Bernardino County city of Hesperia on Thursday, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Jarred Bishop.
Moreno Valley deputies responded at 11:28 p.m. on Sept. 1, 2004 to the 15000 block of Perris Boulevard and found 29-year-old Israel Rangel suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Bishop said. Rangel died at a hospital.
The original investigation led detectives to Sampson as a suspect but there was insufficient evidence at the time to charge him, the sergeant said.
Investigators recently took another look at the cold case and found leads and follow-up tasks, so the case was reopened, he said. The nature of that new information was not further explained.
“Investigators ultimately developed sufficient evidence to support Sampson’s arrest, Bishop said. “On March 19, 2026, with the assistance of the Riverside County District Attorney’s Gang Impact Team, Sampson was arrested without incident in Hesperia.”
The investigation was ongoing and anyone with information was asked to call Master Investigator Robertson or Deputy Lucifora at 951-955-2777.
