A suspicious device resembling an artillery shell discovered Monday on a conveyor belt inside the Burbank Recycle Center has been examined and rendered safe, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched at about 7 a.m. Monday to 500 S. Flower St. regarding a suspicious device found on a conveyor belt inside the facility, the Burbank Police Department reported.

“Upon arrival, Burbank Police officers observed an object that resembled an artillery shell,” according to a police statement. “Out of an abundance of caution, the Recycling Center was evacuated, and the surrounding area was temporarily cordoned off.”

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Arson and Explosive Detail was dispatched to the scene. At about 8:30 a.m., using a robot and specialized equipment, the detail examined the device and determined it did not contain any explosive material.

At about 8:50 a.m., the surrounding area was re-opened to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

No injuries were reported and the origin of the device remained under investigation.
