A 53-year-old man suspected of driving under the influence of a drug and crashing into a supermarket in Burbank has been taken into custody, police announced Tuesday.

Officers were dispatched at approximately 9:45 p.m. on Monday in the 10900 block of Sherman Way, near Vineland Avenue, according to the Burbank Police Department.

The responding officer discovered that a vehicle had driven through the front entrance of a business, causing significant structural damage, police said.

The driver, identified as Ruben Montoya, had exited the vehicle following the crash and began to act ”erratically” inside the store, police said, adding that Montoya allegedly grabbed several items and was aggressive toward employees.

Montoya was located by the responding officers, who issued multiple commands, but he refused to comply and attempted to flee while holding glass bottles.

“A brief struggle ensued, but officers were able to take him into custody safely,” the police department said in a statement.

No officer or members of the public sustained any injuries during the incident.

Montoya was booked on suspicion of multiple offenses, including driving under the influence of a drug and resisting or obstructing a police officer, with formal charges pending review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, police said.

Anyone with information about the case was urged to call the Burbank Police Department Investigations Division at 818-238-3210.
