Three people are dead after a wrong-way driver caused a head-on collision on eastbound Interstate 10 in Coachella, authorities said Wednesday.
The crash was reported at about 10 p.m. Tuesday east of Dillon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A Toyota Camry being driven by a 71-year-old man from Orange was traveling at an unconfirmed speed westbound in the eastbound lanes when it crashed head-on with a Honda Accord. The sole occupant of the Camry and the two occupants inside the Accord — a 50-year-old woman from Phoeniz, Arizona and a male passenger — were all pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said.
Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected to be a factor in the crash, according to the CHP.
“The reason why the Toyota was driving the wrong way is still under investigation,” the agency stated.
Anyone with additional information regarding the collision was asked to call 760-772-5300.
