A woman was fatally struck by a train in Indio, police said Friday.
The woman was struck shortly after 10:30 p.m. Thursday near Indio Boulevard west of Fred Waring Drive, according to the Indio Police Department.
The woman, whose identity was not revealed, was pronounced dead at the scene. It was unclear why she was on the tracks.
A representative for Union Pacific Railroad told City News Service that no crew members on the freight train were injured, and the investigation was ongoing.
Police reminded the public of the dangers of crossing railroad tracks and advised using designated crossings and nearby overpasses when traveling across railroad tracks.
