Police Thursday are searching for a hit-and-run driver who fled the scene after fatally striking a man in his 60s crossing the street in South Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to Manchester and Vermont avenues at 12:52 a.m. Thursday regarding reports of a man lying in the roadway. Witnesses told arriving officers the vehicle was traveling west on Manchester when it struck the pedestrian near Vermont, an LAPD officer told City News Service.

The vehicle drove away from the scene and did not stop to help the victim, police said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene and police did not release a vehicle description.

The department’s West Traffic Bureau is investigating the fatal collision.
